Deb and Melanie Feedback/Comments
Week 2
What do I know this week that I didn’t before?
- I’m getting to know the children’s personalities and quirks
- Not to pick up the children unless they’re asking.
- My immune system isn’t doing well with new antibodies
- I’m beginning to understand how the different children communicate
- Communication with educators (when, where, how)
- Starting to pick up on some sign language
- The true importance of gloves and proper boots/socks and gear outside. We go outside everyday here.
- Allowing the children to come to me when they’d like to play is a better way to get to know them. Instead of interfering with their play and learning.
Highlight:
Monday morning I walked in and was greeted happily by a child I wasn’t sure would like me.
I rode the wave throughout the morning. Engaging in the child’s interests.
Had a conversation with someone here that I was sure didn’t like me. It happened in the lunch room but has taken some of the anxiety off of being here.
Challenge/Professional Development:
Trying to remember not to speak across the room or yard when speaking to a child or educator.
Ideas for Next week:
Unsure. I’m hopeful to start an outdoor art project with the children because they enjoy getting their hands dirty, but don’t want to force it if they’re not interested.
Summary/Reflection:
I feel like I’m always doing something wrong. When I entered the space I was told, “you can do no wrong,” but I keep getting told to do things differently, which means im doing things wrong.
Sitting a certain way when observing, communicating and being reminded to stop talking over the children or across the room. Picking up children when upset or not listening..all things that I’ve been allowed to do while at work. Policies are different and habits are hard to break but I feel like I just keep failing. This week has sucked. I’m emotional about even little things.
Hormones play a role, but these are all things that I’ve been allowed to do at the other center and I’ve seen them all in practice there. UPDATE: I realize these things are against regulations now that I’ve been back in school again.
Maybe Caribou should have given me the list of policies to look over before I started there. I’m a student and have been obviously taught very differently in the field.
