SA and BA are twins. SA typically uses sounds, and facial expressions to communicate with others. The most clear word she says is “no.” BA uses complete sentences but often combines Malayalam and English when speaking. BA gravitates toward other children who are very similar in their language development. This intrigues me because typically twins spend a lot of time together. Both SA and BA understand directions, but just like any typical 2 year old, they don’t always comply.
There is one child(F) in the room who needs extra support and guidance. She is the same age as a child(L) who is potty trained. This intrigues me because while one is behind (developmentally) where a typical child would be, the other is ahead of where most typical 2 year-olds would be. The contrast between these children is like night and day.
F wonders the room in a circular motion, holding objects for short periods of time. F uses sounds and squeals to communicate feelings, and enjoys being one-on-one with adults. Educators are often unsure of what emotions are being portrayed when sounds are made. Whereas L enjoys time with other children and has a whole array of words. F doesn’t use words, and is overwhelmed easily by the environment. Whereas L is potty trained and enjoys playing loudly with other children, shouting and being silly.
