First 48hrs

My first 48hrs of practicum were done in my workplace, where I quickly learned the importance of boundaries. There was a very hard line between work and practicum, as my boss wanted work to come first always.

I was not allowed anytime on the floor to take notes, document, or write down questions. All my school work had to be done on my lunch break(hello burnout!)

I was not allowed to challenge my workspace’s philosophies, or bring in learnings from in class..which is the entire idea of practicum.

My mentor needed to be an ECE, but the person on the floor only had her ECEA(one course) and my boss told me, “we have an agreement with TRU..” so I asked my profs, and they did not know about this.

Obviously the hours collected and credentials for the 200hours are put in place by the registry. All these issues meant I was unable to complete my practicum in my work place.

I am very happy to be placed at Caribou. Not only am I learning so much, but I feel like a valued member of the team in the Marigolds room.

In my first week I was noticing a lot of differences from where I came from to where I am now and it’s safe to say, I prefer the idea of a “yes space,” that allows children and educators to work together and adapt things based on the children’s individual needs.
