Being in practicum, I witnessed a lot of unprofessional language when parents and children weren’t around. There was casual swearing, gossip about coworkers, and unkind words about parents as well.

I have a new appreciation for my old boss. She had a no bullying/gossip policy. When you heard someone gossiping or being unkind in any way, you reported it to her so that it can be stopped. I believe that this also did a lot to prevent bullying and unprofessionalism in the workplace. I have never felt good being around gossip, especially when in a work place. Where you work is supposed to be a professional place, free of unkindness.

However..

We’re human, we mess up from time to time, but we should always be in a place of growth. This comes with self reflective practice, open conversations, and honesty both with ourselves and others.

In the future, if I’m in a space where I don’t see professionalism happening in relationship with other people, I will speak up about it. I will do my best to hold myself to a higher standard, so I don’t fall into the ways of others.
